We will be performing an array of jazz standards and classics from the 1930s to the 1970s - and we may throw in a few aligned original tunes as well! A few pieces include "Nobody Else But Me" (Kern), "Pannonica" (Monk), "Moment's Notice" (Coltrane), "Stable Mates" (Golson), "St. Thomas" (Rollins), "Triste" (Jobim), "My Ideal" (Whiting), and "Isfahan" (Ellington/Strayhorn). These pieces cover some of the most well-known jazz composers and performers - and yet a small sample from such a wide and diverse range of musicians from the jazz era. These are some of my personal favorite tunes to play, as they allow for spontaneity, exploration, and deep musical conversation. With gorgeous melodies and rich harmonies, they give space to all the band members for creative expression. While they all fit into the jazz category, they are also diverse and unique in their own ways, allowing for a beautiful flow within the set. Each piece has something special to offer - for instance, "Nobody Else But Me" brings up feelings of springtime in New York, while "Moment's Notice" brings excitement and ferocity. "Triste" gives us a taste of Brazil, while "My Ideal" illuminates our heart's longing for love. I personally love to improvise on these wonderful compositions, as they allow for freedom and creativity to flow. Looking forward to it!
