Full program notes
For a jazz musician, the American Songbook is both a starting point and a lifelong study. These are among the first melodies we learn to play, and the ones we return to again and again, often finding something new in a song we have performed a hundred times. In this program, the trio approaches this repertoire with deep respect for the original melodies and for the great interpreters who came before us, while allowing our own voices to come through.

Historical context
From the early 1930s into the 1960s, composers like Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers wrote songs for Broadway shows and Hollywood films that became known as the Great American Songbook. Jazz musicians took those songs and made them their own, reharmonizing them and improvising on their chord changes, and many are now known as much from jazz records as from the stage. On Green Dolphin Street came from a 1947 film score and became a jazz standard after Miles Davis recorded it in 1958. My Funny Valentine, from a 1937 musical, is now inseparable from the recordings of Chet Baker and Miles Davis. The guitar, bass and drums trio carries that tradition in its most conversational form, three voices passing the melody between them.
