Full program notes
For fifteen seasons, Endris has brought to life the music, revelry and history of Christmas in early America. Our program breathes life into every selection: raucous wassailing, folkloric songs and beautiful sacred works all comprise the tapestry of celebration. We share stories of the history of Christmas and music in early America, from rowdy gangs of revelers, to singing schools and Puritans who didn't like any of it very much. We cordially invite you to share in this annual celebration of light amidst darkness, warmth in the cold, and jollity in trying times.
Historical context
We take a living history approach to this music - all of the selections have a great deal of historical pedigree, so to speak, but are also arranged and presented in ways that may showcase their spirit and beauty more than traditional historical 'authenticity', whatever we might take that word to mean. In all choices, artistic and historic, we seek to connect with the composers and celebrants of this music through the years, and continue their mirth and reverence.
