About

The Valencia Baryton Project centers around the rarely heard string instrument, the baryton. Played professionally by fewer than 20 people worldwide the baryton has the 6 front strings of a viol da gamba but has a little surprise in the back - 10 additional strings that can be plucked with the thumb and create a whole new accompanying soundscape! The trio has recorded 2 albums of Haydn's baryton trios for Naxos records that have been praised by the Strad as 'delightfully inventive' and by Ritmo as 'exquisite chamber music playing'. Beyond their concerts in Europe, in the last 2 years the trio has also performed over 50 concerts in the US, Canada and Latin America.

Music

We specialize in the nearly 170 works for the baryton by Franz Joseph Haydn but also have commissioned a full program's worth of modern repertoire as well as perform works by Haydn's lesser known 18th century contemporaries at the Esterhazy court such as Andreas Lidl, Luigi Tomasini and Joseph Burgksteiner.
