About

Violist, Sydney Whipple, is native to Oakland, California. She is a current student of Carol Roland at The Juilliard School where she is a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. Sydney began lessons on the violin at age 5 and switched to the viola when she was 10. With a desire to share her love of music, she created a year-long music program teaching violin at her middle school. More recently, Sydney organized a benefit concert to support music education in San Francisco public schools.
Sydney spent her freshman year at Interlochen Arts Academy as a student of Renée Skerik, and the rest of her highschool years studying under Dimitri Murrath at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Program. In addition she has played in masterclasses for Kim Kashkashian, Ori Kam, and Donald McInnes and won top prizes at the 2019 Cal ASTA and Northern California Viola Society solo competitions. Sydney also has an interest in how music relates to the brain and empathy.
