Let's set the scene for the centerpiece of an explosive CMS Night Out at Lincoln Center we've got on the horizon:
It's July of 1941, and French composer Olivier Messiaen premiers his masterwork, Quartet For The End Of Time, in a prisoner-of-war camp on broken-down instruments, weathered and battered by a world at war, to the rapt attention of 400 prisoners and guards - souls who lived every day at the very verge of apocalypse. It has gone on to become recognized as perhaps the preeminent expression of war-time sorrow and horror and hope -- and it's a piece that'll reverberate through the ages.
These are not those days. But these are days nonetheless, and this piece is as urgent and as powerful as it was back on that summer day in 1941. And so it's with great pride that we declare that The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center - one of the leading chamber music societies in the world - invites us to join for their shattering rendition of this titanic masterwork.
And you know it's a good program when it takes this long to mention that Brahms and Stravinsky will also be on the docket. The evening opens with the first Brahms Clarinet Sonata, a glorious late masterpiece, and is followed by Stravinsky's splendid Suite italienne for Violin and Piano.
Tickets typically average $60 - but CMS loves us, so we've got a stack for $25! These tend not to last though, so make your move!
What's the music?
