Welcome to the third Massivemuse at The Century Club of California - where we bring a casual and intimate musical experience to a beautiful and historic venue in the middle of San Francisco.
This concert will feature violinist Edwin Huizinga, one of the faces of the Carmel Bach Festival, joined by pianist Ian Scarfe and cellist Lewis Patzner. Their program will not only take the audience on a tour of great music of the past three centuries, but it will take full advantage of this incredible space.
The trio will perform first "on the floor", short and lively works by Handel, Bach, and Kreisler played in the midst of the audience, in the middle of the club's grand ballroom. Then the trio will perform "from the stage", showcasing the club's newly rebuilt 1950 Steinway D piano, with works by Amy Beach, Felix Mendelssohn, and Edvard Grieg.
The Century Club of California is one of the oldest women’s clubs in the San Francisco Bay area. Founded in 1888 to prepare and encourage women to participate in public life, its members have been deeply involved in the social and cultural growth of the city since the club’s inception. Its circa-1905 Franklin Street clubhouse was spared during the firestorm that followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, while nearly everything east of Franklin burned. As San Francisco was rebuilding, the clubhouse temporarily became home to City Hall offices and the California State Supreme Court while continuing to host other important civic and cultural events in its ballroom auditorium.
