Before Johann Sebastian Bach became one of classical music’s most towering figures, there was another Bach captivating audiences with music of extraordinary emotional intensity. The Profound Bach, presented by ARTEK, shines a light on Johann Christoph Bach, J. S. Bach’s older cousin and the celebrated musical star of the Bach family in 17th-century Germany. His expressive cantatas and motets combine soaring vocal lines, virtuosic violin writing, and deeply affecting sacred music that feels surprisingly immediate across the centuries.
Featuring soprano Sarah Frei, contralto Kirsten Sollek, tenor Matthew Newhouse, and bass Peter Becker, alongside a period-instrument ensemble led by violinist Cynthia Freivogel and director Gwendolyn Toth, the program includes the radiant wedding cantata Meine Freundin, du bist schön and the haunting lament Ach, dass ich Wassers gnug hätte.
With a pre-concert lecture (starting at 6:15) offering insight into the musical world that shaped the Bach family, this is an opportunity to discover a remarkable composer whose work deserves to be heard far more often.
Join ARTEK at Saint Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on November 19 or 20 at 7 p.m. through Groupmuse Nights Out for just $15—an evening of extraordinary early music at half the usual price. 🎶
