Leonard Bernstein looms large over the story of classical music in 20th Century America. A prodigious composer, conductor, pianist, activist, communicator, educator, intellectual, and apostle for this great art form, Bernstein turned an entire generation on to classical music in his 72 years.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of his birth and around the country, arts organizations are celebrating the life and legacy of this generous giant and our beloved friends at the Oakland Symphony are showing up for the occasion and they want us to come along.

On May 18th, we'll gather in Downtown Oakland's legendary Paramount Theater to witness Bernstein’s Serenade after Plato’s “Symposium”  for Violin & Orchestra, led by violinist Liana Bérubé.

It’ll be followed by Tchaikovsky’s enormous, wrenching, and desperately beautiful Symphony no. 6, the Pathétique, often regarded as his greatest work.

It’ll be a grand testament to the power of this art to illuminate our inner worlds.

Tickets average $50, but because the Oakland Symphony and Groupmuse are cut of the same cloth, we’ve got a stack for $20 — but the supplies are limited so definitely grab yours if you want to be a part of it!

And have a Groupmuse Night Out!
