It doesn’t need to be said that these are times of great uncertainty for this form of expression that we all hold so dear. Groupmuse has been working tirelessly to adapt and create rewarding experiences for our community while securing meaningful financial support for our wonderful musicians in a time of crisis. And, most thankfully, Groupmuse is not alone in this battle to reimagine classical music in times of COVID and the thereafter. We’re all going to need to come together with our best thinking and most open hearts to prevail, so this week’s Massivemuse is in collaboration with AfterArts — another organization that is doing brilliant and innovative work charting a path here.
After Arts is a community of business professionals who have a passion for and background in music. In response to COVID, they created After Arts: After Dark - a thematic event series that blends story-telling and music making, featuring performances by prominent musicians and conversations with arts leaders from around the world. The series is designed to support performing musicians and various nonprofit organizations. We’ve decided to take up their format for the night with some beloved Groupmuse stalwarts:
The theme of the evening is community, and we’ve got a trio of a violin and two cellos — the terrific Kiyoshi Hayashi, Eungee Cho and Joy Yanai — beaming in from Groupmuse Boston for the first half, sharing stories of community weaved through a program of Schubert, Corelli, and more, and then we’ve got Jacopo Giacopuzzi, an award-winning pianist in from Groupmuse LA, with his own stories weaved through Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and more.
After the performance, we’ll be back in Zoom for a critical panel discussion about the future of patronage for classical music in an age of pandemic and afterwards. It’ll be moderated by Nicholas King, the founder of AfterArts, and it’ll feature Nicholas Csicsko - classical-musician-turned-investor and many-time board member, Mosa Tsay - Juilliard trained cellist, current Fulbright fellow, and performer at over 100 groupmuses (!), and Sam Bodkin, Founder/CEO of Groupmuse and author of all the long-winded emails you so patiently read all of the time.
Even in times of isolation, the only way forward is together and in solidarity — so we hope you’ll join us as we forge a path.
After Arts is a community of business professionals with a passion for and a background in music. If you’re a surgeon who mastered the cello, a management consultant who majored in piano, or a corporate attorney with a penchant for jazz trombone - this is the community for you!
With 500+ members across virtually all private sectors, After Arts hosts a wide variety of incredibly thought-provoking events that bring together an accomplished community of people.
These events have included speakers such as Sir Clive Gillinson, Executive Director of Carnegie Hall; Ann Ziff, Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera; and Henry Timms, President of Lincoln Center. After Arts also hosts chamber music parties in iconic private NYC locations and a series of online Zoom events.
