Historical context

Classical guitar is, historically, a “room-sized” instrument. Long before it became a conservatory staple, it lived in salons, parlors, and house concerts—music designed for close listening, where the smallest changes in color and touch actually matter.

This program follows that lineage while showing how wide the guitar’s world really is. You’ll hear the instrument’s modern classical voice through 20th–21st century composers (from Villa-Lobos and Brouwer to living writers), where the guitar expands into something orchestral, rhythmic, and cinematic—often drawing from dance, folk influence, and concert tradition. At the same time, the guitar has always had a parallel “vernacular” lineage—popular styles and electric-era heroes shaping how we understand tone, phrasing, and personal voice. Bringing those threads together isn’t a gimmick; it’s a historically honest portrait of the guitar as a bridge instrument.
