The 20th Century was an odd one for classical music. It started off as a logical extension of the 19th century, with orchestration getting richer, symphonies getting longer, harmonies getting more and more ripe - but then there were a couple of big wars, the whole world changed a whole bunch, and with it, classical music. The challenges, horrors, and conveniences of modernity brought about some big questions for composers to deal with; namely: What even is Music?

Some explorations and experiments from the mid-20th Century avant-garde haven’t proven to be particularly durable, but a long-standing exception is the work of George Crumb. And now, 90 years old and still kicking, Crumb has lived long enough to see his legacy firmly take root — and none other than the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society is honoring that legacy with a celebration of his body of work. Best of all, they want us to join for a Night Out!

Crumb’s music is lush and poignant; challenging at times, but so rewarding. And it’s weird — he stretches the instruments to the limit of their sonic potential, but his creations always have such spirit and soul at their core. It might at times furrow your brow, but it’ll always take your breath away.

Tickets to this one average $50 or more, but we’ve got a big, heavily-discounted stack for only $20! But it’s Lincoln Center after all, so you might want to move while there are still some around!*
